I started writing the “About me” section for the site and realized that there’s a lot I want to write about, and there are only so many hours a day so I’ll split it into a couple of posts and put what’s most relevant on the about page as I progress.
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Joel Fox Apelgren, I’m a first and foremost a musician, but also a songwriter and nowadays a web developer. I was born in 1986 in Stockholm, Sweden where I have lived my entire life.
I started my musical journey at age 9 when I started taking piano lessons. Both my mother and father had been playing the piano while I grew up, so it was a natural thing to do. Note: when I applied for the music school and had to choose an instrument, my second weapon of choice was the accordion(?).
I played the piano for quite a long time, and I really enjoyed it. I started out playing classical piano, but as I got a new teacher after a few years, I also got introduced to blues, and that was a very exciting experience for me. One could even call it an epiphany.
After five years or so, I had started to grow somewhat tired of constantly playing my instrument by myself, and playing in a band was a concept that I hadn’t really got introduced to. Then one day something incredible happened. My regular teacher (who I like a lot) was ill, and could not make it to the piano lesson, so I was going to have a substitute teacher for a few weeks. When I got into the rehearsal room, there was a guy sitting on a chair playing electric bass. He introduced himself and put away the bass guitar, and the piano lesson started as usual.
For some reason, something happened in me. I had no experience of the instrument bass guitar before that, apart from knowing it existed of course, but after that I could not stop thinking about it. It was the ultimate instrument.
Powerful, yet humble.
To be continued…
